Dean and I have been together since we were 19, he proposed a few months shy of our 10 year anniversary. The term ’10 year test run’ had been thrown around quite a bit! He proposed while we were at Cable Bay on Waiheke Island, sitting on bean bags, drinking rose, eating cheese, and with our fur baby Flo on his knee. It was perfect!
THE INITIAL STAGES
Let’s be honest, after 10 years there was already a lot that had been thought about for our wedding day! Dean proposed in June, and we were married the following March, so we got into planning straight away. I was very organized with the planning in the lead up, so that the days leading up to the wedding we were able to go with the flow, as we did the set up ourselves, and didn’t know exactly how it would turn out until we had it all there at the time.
We did have a pretty clear idea on the style. I’d describe our style as relaxed elegance. We didn’t want anything to be over-styled, but rather make the most of all of the natural beauty surrounding us. Even though it was at a beach location, it definitely wasn’t a beach wedding, our dress code was ‘a day at the polo’. It was full of DIY and personal. Our friends and family mean the world to us, and we were more interested in them (and us!) having the best day, rather than how perfect everything looked, so we kept our styling minimalistic and natural.
We tried to use local vendors where possible. We knew our furniture would play a big role in the overall look and feel of our wedding, and contacted Louisiana Lucy very early on in the planning, as we knew this was perfect for our vibe.
We set a budget at the start and referred back to it throughout. It does all add up quickly, my advice is to decide on what matters most to you both, and look to cut costs on things that don’t matter as much! For example I cut costs on flowers as I figured our location was so beautiful, we didn’t need to go OTT with the florals, as we decided our music was far more important in having the best time, so we put more budget towards that. For us it was food, booze & music = good times!
If you’re not getting a videographer I would highly recommend getting someone to set up a video camera to record your speeches, just for your own keepsake. It’s a moment in time that you will never get back, and they are so, so special.
Something I found, if you are close with your family (we both have huge extended family) people actually want to help, so if you are DIY-ing, totally delegate! All the little parts people played made our day extra special.

And of course I’ll add a little advice around the important dresses- When it comes to your bridesmaids – make sure they are 100% comfortable in what they are wearing. They will love you for it, and enjoy their day so much more.
When it comes to your dress – only talk to a couple of people about it. Too many opinions will be confusing. And go with your gut, if you’re not sure, keep looking!
